Practice Experience:
Dr. Van Arsdell moved to Knoxville in 1994. He first spent three years in joint practice with Dr. Paul Watson, who is now retired, before beginning his solo practice in 1997. He currently also serves as the Medical Director for Little Creek Sanitarium, a premier local nursing home.
Before coming to Knoxville, Dr. Van Arsdell spent two rewarding years as a physician at mission hospitals in Thailand and Singapore.
Although he enjoys all aspects of medicine, he relishes the challenges of diagnosing and treating complex medical conditions. Dr. Van Arsdell also gains great satisfaction from helping his patients implement lifestyle changes to dramatically improve overall health. He’s been a medical advisor to the community-based Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP), a comprehensive lifestyle educational program that is proven to substantially lower blood lipid levels, blood pressures, and blood sugar levels—while also helping with weight loss and decreasing the need for prescription medications.
Education:
Dr. Van Arsdell earned his bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from Andrews University in 1983. He then received his medical school training at Loma Linda University in California, graduating in 1987. From 1987-1991 he completed his Internal Medicine residency at Kettering Medical Center in Ohio.
Board Certification and Licensure:
He is specialty certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and licensed by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Van Arsdell and his wife, Joan, have been married since 1986. After a long struggle with infertility and miscarriages, they feel very blessed to be the parents of an active young son, born to them in 2002. Dr. Van Arsdell enjoys travel, computers, and spending time outdoors with his family.
